Classroom:North Texas shortstop Katya Muller will graduate from the University of North Texas in May of 2008 with a degree in public relations. After graduation she envisions working in public relations for a sports team. She carries a 3.623 grade point average. She has been named to the school’s President’s List her first semester at North Texas and has been named to the Dean’s List three times. She has also been named to the Sun Belt Conference Commissioner’s List and Academic Honor Roll. Following her junior year, she was named to the Mean Green All-Academic Team in 2007.
Character:Katya began to show her leadership abilities starting as a freshman. She has been a team representative for SAAC (Student-Athlete Advisory Committee) from her freshman year through her senior year. She served as the public relations chair for SAAC her junior year and coordinated the Hurricane Katrina relief fund raiser as a sophomore. She served as the UNT representative at the Sun Belt SAAC Conference in New Orleans before her junior year and currently serves as the SAAC President. This past October, she attended the NCAA Division I Regional Leadership Conference.
Community:Katya has been active in the community all four years of college. Along with the North Texas softball team, Katya has volunteered with the Salvation Army Kettle Ringing every winter holiday. She has also done volunteer work with the Salvation Army Angel Tree Program, the Community Civic League’s Angel Tree Program and the Texas Scottish Rite Children’s Hospital. Over Halloween, Katya has been involved with the City of Grapevine Halloween Street Carnival and the North Texas Student Union Boo Bash. Katya has also given back to her sport. She has done a variety of coaching over her four years at North Texas. During the fall seasons of her sophomore, junior and senior year, Katya has coached a fall league high school softball team.
Competition:Katya was named to the 2008 Preseason All-Sun Belt team. She was a First Team All-Sun Belt honoree last year in 2007 after leading the Mean Green with 63 hits, the third most in school history. She also led the team with 17 multi-hit games and 13 doubles. The shortstop finished second on team with a .332 batting average, which tied for second on the single-season record list. Muller was second on the team in slugging percentage, on-base percentage, home runs, RBI, runs scored and total bases. As a junior, she set the school record for hits in a single game with 69 and was named to the conference all-tournament team. She has been the leader of the infield since her freshman year when she started every game she played in. She has started every game she has played in and has missed just one game since she arrived at North Texas.
