Classroom:Sara is a 4.0 student, majoring in biology with a concentration in neurobiology and a women's studies minor. Sara will graduate in May and currently has a perfect 4.0 GPA. She has been accepted to Stony Brook Medical School and plans on studying orthopedic medicine. She is a member of the Women in Science and Engineering (WISE) Program, the WISE Student Leadership Council, the Alpha Tau Freshman Honor Society, the National Society of Collegiate Scholars, the Golden Key International Honour Society, the Sigma Beta Undergraduate Honor Society, the Stony Brook Pre-Medical Society and the the Stony Brook Society of Distinguished Scholar Athletes (Fall 2004, Spring 2005, Fall 2005, Spring 2006, Fall 2006, Spring 2007) which is a recognition given to student athletes by the Stony Brook Athletics Department for achieving a GPA of 3.5 or above for the semester. Sara has been a member of the National Dean’s List for three years, was the recipient of the 2005 Sei Sujishi Prize given by the Stony Brook chemistry department to the highest achieving student in all freshman chemistry classes at Stony Brook, the 2006 Colbert Scholarship given by the Department of Undergraduate Biology at Stony Brook to a student showing excellence in undergraduate biology studies, the Debbie Whittemore Memorial Scholarship given by the Stony Brook Athletic Department and the Athletic Training Department to students who display academic and athletic excellence and have contributed to their communities in a positive way. She was a 2005-2006 National Fast-pitch Coaches Association All-America Scholar-Athlete, a three time member of the America East Winter/Spring Academic Honor Roll and the America East Commissioner’s Honor Roll, a six time member of the Dean's List. She has contributed to the Medical Ethics Online Textbook by Professor Philip Pecorino, Ph.D. and done research on the use of a simple oscillating device (VIBE plate) to decrease the loss of bone mineral density in patients recovering from spinal cord injuries under Professor Clinton T. Rubin, Ph.D.
Character:Sara tore her ACL playing basketball her senior year of high school, forcing her to sit out her first year at Stony Brook. She went through rehab, only to break her ankle her freshman year, forcing her to miss the rest of the season. She went through rehab a second time and is now a starting outfielder. It was because of those two injuries she decided to go into orthopedic medicine. Last year, a teammate of Sara's was in jeopardy of failing off the team, so Sara volunteered her time to work with that teammate and the academic advisers over the summer to keep her eligible.
Community:Sara has spent time coaching a travel softball teams at the 10 and under, 12 and under and 14 and under levels and helped to bring all teams to the PONY National Fast-Pitch Softball Tournament. She has volunteered at Read-a-Thon, Women in Sports Day, Special Olympics, Halloween FunFest, Thanksgiving Turkey Trot, at the Stony Brook Medical Center Blood Bank. She is involved in Perspectives Program and WISE recruitment- went to Floral Park Memorial High School to talk with perspective students about programs and opportunities at Stony Brook. She has various softball clinics for the Floral Park Little League and Elmont Little League and is the recipient of The President’s Volunteer Service Award from the President’s Council on Service and Civic Participation an award sponsored by the Office of the President of the United States given to individuals who have contributed to their communities through their volunteer services.
Competition:Sara led the Seawolves in batting average as a sophomore, is a two-time captain, has started 76 games during her three years, is a starting outfielder this season and is looked to as a team leader on and off the field by teammates and the Stony Brook coaching staff.
