Classroom:Floccari, an investigative and medical sciences major, owns a 3.99 cumulative GPA. She also has a minor in biology and will receive a certificate in theology. After graduating with her bachelor's degree this May, Floccari plans to attend medical school to pursue a career as a physician. She was one of only 30 freshmen to receive Saint Louis University’s most prestigious academic award, the Presidential Scholarship, in the fall of 2004. This scholarship is a four-year, full-tuition academic award that translates into a four-year membership in SLU’s Presidential Scholar Society. The society members meet on a monthly basis and take part in the annual interview weekend for the next year’s scholarship recipients. Floccari is also a member of Alpha Sigma Nu, the Jesuit Honor Society. Less than four percent of junior and senior classes at each Jesuit institution receive this honor. To qualify for membership, a student must rank in the top 15 percent of his/her class and demonstrate a commitment to the ideals of scholarship, loyalty and service. In addition, Floccari is a member of Alpha Epsilon Delta, the Health Preprofessional Honor Society, which is dedicated to promoting excellence in preprofessional health care. This organization recognizes academic achievement and also functions as a service organization. Floccari, a four-time member of the Atlantic 10 Conference Commissioner’s Honor Roll, earned a spot on the 2007 A-10 Academic All-Conference team.
Character:Floccari has been a leader on the Billiken softball team since her freshman campaign. As a rookie, she had the team’s lowest ERA and was the only Billiken pitcher with double-digit wins. She also led the team with 40 appearances, 20 complete games, 195.1 innings pitched and 132 strikeouts. Floccari remained one of Saint Louis’ top options in the circle during her sophomore and junior years, but she took a backseat to one of her teammates in terms of statistics. Her perseverance and loyalty to the team have paid off as she will be Saint Louis’ top threat in the circle this season as a senior. She has also sought experiences that she believes will help her in her future profession. During the summer, Floccari’s thirst for knowledge led her to spend a significant amount of time shadowing physicians at Saint Louis University Hospital and hospitals around her hometown in Ohio. She has accumulated more than 100 hours of shadowing experience in hospitals.
Community:She is involved in numerous community-service efforts. Floccari serves as a HOSTS (Helping One Student to Succeed) mentor by tutoring third-graders. She also uses her experience and skills as a Division I pitcher to instruct other young pitchers. Floccari teaches young players about different pitching techniques, practice regimens and the mental strength necessary for success. Floccari is also a member of the national service fraternity Alpha Phi Omega. Through this organization, she has participated in events on campus including Relay for Life, the SLU food drive, Make a Difference Day and Showers of Service. Her off-campus efforts include volunteering with Habitat for Humanity, Bell Garden and St. Mary’s Orphanage. Floccari has volunteered in the emergency and operating rooms at SLU Hospital to gain experience for her future profession. Her responsibilities included transporting patients, assisting medical technicians and stocking medical supplies and equipment. She also served as a Barnes-Jewish Hospital SportsWorks volunteer. Floccari helped staff the SportsWork exhibit, where she discussed nutrition and physical activity and their effects on the body.
Competition:Floccari, who will be the Billikens’ top pitching option in 2008, is the Saint Louis softball program’s active career leader in pitching appearances (108) and saves (5). She also ranks second in career innings pitched (491.2) and games started (74), third in shutouts (7), fourth in wins (29), complete games (46) and strikeouts (317), and 10th in ERA (3.80). Her 34 appearances in the circle in 2007 is the junior standard.
